Installation Tips For Cooktops

There are both induction and gas cooktops. Induction cooktops heat pots and pans using magnetic fields instead of heating coils or flames. They have been in the market since the 1950s, but are recently increasing in popularity among home remodelers who dream to have state-of-the-art kitchens. Induction cooktops have a number of advantages compared to gas and electric units, such as being more energy-efficient, safer, easier to maintain, and are able to cook foods faster.

Observe Minimum Clearances

When it comes to installing an induction cooktop, ensure that the installed appliance should have sufficient space from the combustible materials both on top and below, and on either side. Every manufacturer will have their specific recommendations when it comes to the amount of clearance required.

 Electrical Requirements

Most induction cooktops need to have a grounded, dedicated 240- volt circuit that is protected with 40 or 50-amp breakers. They terminate in an approved junction box placed below the counter on the wall behind it. Manufacturers usually suggest that the ideal location of the junction box can differ depending on whether the cable for power supply feeds in the housing of the cooktop from the right or left. However, it should be around 16 inches below the bottom. This way, the connections that are in the box will not be exposed to too much heat.

If you are planning to install an induction cooktop in a brand new place, it is advised to have a professional electrician check if the existing electric service in your home will be able to support the cooktop and do the required wiring.

 Gas Cooktops

If you are planning to purchase a new gas cooktop, hiring a professional to do the installation for you could cost up to a few hundred dollars. However, you can save this amount of money by doing it on your own. Simply keep in mind the following tips and you will be able to install your gas cooktop safely.

Purchase the Right Gas Stove Connector

When installing a gas cooktop, you should never reuse a connector. So before you start, go to a hardware store or home center to purchase a new one. Buying a suitable connector is one of the most crucial steps to installing the cooktop safely. You should also look out for the following:

  • Ensure that it is clearly marked for a range.
  • Purchase a connector that is long enough so that you have enough space to work between the wall and the stove.
  • Get a connector that includes the end connecter fittings you will require.

Check for Leaks

It is very important to always check for any leaks after you have installed the cooktop. Switch on the gas cock and proceed to light the range burners for approximately one minute so that the air escapes from the gas line. Afterwards, use a gas leak detector to spray the joints. Alternatively, you can also use soapy, warm water. If you notice there are bubbles around a joint, it means there is a leak. To make sure it is safer, you can also contact the local gas company to double-check your work.
